AvroKO’s Furniture Line “The Transport Series”

The most recent addition to AvroKO’s unique repertoire is a furniture line that is inspired by early 20th century motorcar and motorcycle forms.

Entitled “The Transport Series”, the line includes pieces such as the Stanhope Light, the Rollie Stool, the Percy Maxim Chair and Ottoman, the Stoddard Table, and the Wallace Storage Unit (dog bed).

AvroKO’s references for the furniture were derived from various vehicles that were built before assembly lines and mass production became the norm. These types of motor vehicles, created in small mechanical shops and barns throughout the country, often included a strange hybrid of stagecoach details and modernized utility driven metal work. Early motorcycle design continued the trend with saddle-like forms for the seating but also included restructured bicycle parts. Although AvroKO’s furniture line is thoroughly modern, the pieces were designed applying details derived from these distinct, classic features.

The furniture available in Manhattan at Sublime (American Design) on 26 Varick, Tribeca 212-941-8888.

Good Design Awards 2006

The "Good Design Award" is Japan's only comprehensive design evaluation and commendation system. This system itself has its origins in the "Good Design Selection System" (generally known as the "G-Mark System") instituted by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in 1957. Having achieved to build a foundation to nurture the industry and design of Japan, many participation from every country in the world have been joining this award as a synthetic design evaluation system, and the awarded designs count more than 30,000 items so far. At the time this system was created, the concept of "design" was scarcely given a second thought in Japan. The system was therefore created as a policy measure for bringing about the simultaneous development of everyday life and industry. More and more companies have begun to incorporate design into industrial activities, and the system itself has continued to expand and develop with the participation of these companies. The fields with which it is concerned have spread from consumer goods to industrial goods, public facilities, and even beyond industrial field such as ecological activities. Good Design Award has developed today into a comprehensive design evaluation system that centers on industrial products but includes products in a wide variety of fields such as architecture, the environment, communication and even experimental design in state-of-the-art technical fields and business models that have design at their core. Today most consumers support the "Good Design Award." All Japanese companies that have incorporated design into their operations and are engaged in state-of-the-art production are participating in this system.

The scope of the "Good Design Award" now transcends mere evaluation of design, and this system is now beginning to play a dynamic role in getting us to think about basic matters such as the lives we should be living and how industry can undergo continuous development.

”LUISA” chaiselounge :: GAM plus FRATESI

”…like at grandmothers home – all her best furniture are always covered in plastic so they don’t get dirty.”

Inside out – a non typical experience of the materials; to have the warm soft material, that usual would be in contact with the body, is here closed in between two layers of transparent acrylic. As well the flower-motifs are closed inside the acrylic, so you have the visual contact with the softness and the decoration – You can see but not touch…With this concept we have made a collection of prototypes of stools/tables and chaise lounge. You can have two different principles; the decoration can be done as a print on the acrylic, like this creating coloured reflections on the side of the furniture; otherwise cutting out the pattern directly in the felt, obtaining transparency in the object. As a curious detail the felt is coming out from the acrylic, turned and fastened as a pillow for the head.
